August 2002 - Conference trip to the city of Tartu in Estonia.
There was a small conference on landscape studies in the University of Tartu in August, 2002. It was held to celebrate the anniversaries of late geographers Edgar Kant and J.G. Granö. I went to Tartu to participate in the conference. I was accommodated by my friend Santeri who had bought an apartment in an old wooden building in a quartier called Supilinn.
I arrived in Tartu on Thursday afternoon August, 22nd. In the evening, there was a get-together reception at Villa Tammekan which is a joint research and education centre of the universities of Turku and Tartu. Santeri came to show me the way and stayed also in the reception himself.

On Sunday there was an after-conference trip to the villages of Russian Old Believers on the shore of Lake Peipsi. The people there fish and grow excellent onions. We also visited briefly a former collective farm (kolkhoz) and the Alatskivi manor.
