Photos of places : Roseau : French Quarter
French Quarter is the oldest part of the city of Roseau. The first Frenchmen settled in there already when Roseau was still called Sairi and was the main Kalinago village on the west coast of Dominica.
Main square of the French Quarter is Dawbiney Square, currently known as the Old Market. On the map, it is easy to recognize the French Quarter. Around the square the streets are crooked in contrast with the square grid plan of the surrounding ares later planned by the British.
Main artery of the Quarter is King George V Street which has many of the finest old wooden houses in Roseau with their decorated balconies.
Roseau photographs of this site are taken by Niko Lipsanen. The pictures on this page are taken in November and December, 2007. Older images (taken in 1999 and 1993) can be found at the old Roseau Photo Gallery.
