Gavar

Gavar is the capital of Gegharkunik marz. It is still not a busy centre but rather a quiet and a bit ramshackle town.

We came to Gavar by bus from Sevan and spent there one night. We walked in the city and looked around. In the morning we continued our way to the neighbouring Noraduz village.

Name of the city is sometimes written with two r's: Gavarr. The locals pronounce it something like "Kyavar". Like many other Armenian towns, it has changed its name several times. In the 19th century, when the town was established, it was called Nor Bayezet. In the Soviet times the name was changed to Kamo.
